iTunes Store

iTunes Store is a software-based online digital media store operated by Apple Inc, iTunes has sold more than 5 billion songs to date, accounting for more than 70% of worldwide online digital music sales and making the service the largest legal music retailer. And it offers excellent integration with the world's best-selling MP3 player, the iPod. It's catalog contains more than 8 million songs as well as a variety of podcasts, TV shows, and movies. The one major bummer is that most of the tracks sold in iTunes can only be played on the iPod or iPhone and not any other MP3 player because they are protected by FairPlay which is the Apple's version of digital rights management. And these DRM protected files are basically M4P formats.

What is FLAC?

FLAC is the abbreviation of Free Lossless Audio Codec, it's a file format for lossless audio data compression. Being lossless, FLAC does not remove information from the audio stream, as lossy compression formats such as MP3, AAC, and Ogg Vorbis do. And Being lossless, the sound quality of FLAC files is much better than MP3, AAC or Ogg Vorbis while the file size of FLAC files are also bigger than MP3, AAC or Ogg Vorbis.

FLAC is suitable for everyday audio playback and archival, with support for tagging, cover art and fast seeking. FLAC's free and open source royalty-free nature makes it well-supported by many software applications. FLAC playback support in portable audio devices and dedicated audio systems was limited, but now more and more players, such as iRiver E100, iRiver Spinn, Sandisk Sansa Fuze, Cowon A3 and iAudio F2, have already support FLAC playback.
